  1. Poor Commodus is always made out to be a sniveling dork in the movies. He was a rather poor emperor, to be sure.

  2. GOD DAMN, I LOVE THIS MAN.

"...father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and I shall have my vengeance. IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT."

    YOW!!!!!!

OSCAR NIGHT 2001 was quite the evening at the Wilding house.

I'm fond of GLADIATOR. I find it immensely stirring and moving.

    "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED???!!!"

But should it have been in that lineup? NAW. I don't really have any problems with it taking home the gold, though. There have been SO MANY winners over the years that were just disgustingly bad.

I would've voted for ERIN B. Though TRAFFIC would've been cool too.

But I can live with GLADIATOR. EASILY.

BUT JULIA WON!!!!!! (I KNOW, Danny. Hah hah. Bear with me. Please.)

    MARCIA GAY HARDEN WON!!!!!!

    AND MY BELOVED RUSSELL WON!!!!!!

Russell and Julia gave the best performances of 2000 in my estimation and Marcia was far and away the best out of her category.

I can't support Benicio's win. (AT ALL.) But that was an extremely thrilling almost perfect evening.

Wish more Oscar nights were like that.

Russell is the living end...and then some.

  3. Yeah, I would’ve voted for Erin B. too, but whatever. I quite liked Gladiator and Crowe was great.

  4. Nice. I half-expected I was going to be "tossed into the ring", as it were, for this clip. There is some serious vitriol out there for this movie. Bring it if you have it.

I've liked it every time I've seen it. Sure it has flaws and some silly moments (like you mention, Alexander), but as far as historical epics go I'll take this over a Troy or 300 or Alexander any day of the week. This is when Crowe really came alive for me too, Miranda. In the 90's he was just a talented face (Confidential, Virtuousity, even The Insider to some extent), but in this movie it was like, "Wow, this dude owns the screen." I think he has ever since. Anyway, I've always loved this delivery, even though it's never been as cool as the first time I heard it in the theater.

I'm not going to defend its Oscar win other than by saying I agree with Miranda that far lesser movies have won - recently.

So Scott and Crowe team up again this week, another appropriate reason to post it. I'll have my review of Body of Lies up tomorrow or Friday...stay tuned...

  5. I am afraid to say anything here, so I figured I would remain silent. But if I do that I deprive you a comment. LOL!!!!

But yeah, I wouldn't place a wager on this one.

  6. Haha, there it is, Sam. Like I said, this movie is considered complete garbage by a large portion of the population, and I'm not in the business of convincing them otherwise. I'm just providing a safe refuge for its fans here!
